What 600GSM Means — and When You Need It
GSM stands for grams per square meter — the dry weight of the carbon fiber fabric per unit area. A 600GSM strap contains twice the fiber mass of a 300GSM strap at the same width. Both fabrics start from the same raw carbon fiber tow, but the 600GSM layup uses twice as many fiber layers in the same footprint. The result is a stiffer, thicker strap that delivers substantially greater resistance to wall movement in a compact width.
This matters in two specific scenarios. The first is when wall space is limited — when column spacing, window openings, mechanical penetrations, or interior finishing constrain where and how wide a strap can be. In these situations, a 6-inch 600GSM strap delivers high-load reinforcement without requiring the 8-inch or 12-inch width that the wall geometry cannot accommodate. The second scenario is when the substrate is strong enough to fully transfer load from a dense strap — specifically, sound poured concrete. The 600GSM strap is not recommended for block walls or weak concrete, where the substrate will debond before the fiber reaches its load capacity. For those applications, a wider 300GSM strap distributes load more effectively.
Curved Surfaces and Non-Standard Geometries
The 6-inch 600GSM is the preferred width for curved concrete surfaces — round columns, arched walls, barrel vaults, and curved retaining walls. Narrower straps conform more readily to surface curvature without bridging or lifting at the strap edges. On a curved surface, a wide strap tends to contact the wall at the center and lift away from the substrate at the edges, creating an unbonded zone that compromises the repair. The 6-inch width follows the curve geometry closely enough to maintain full contact throughout, particularly important with the 600GSM's greater stiffness.

Installation — 6-Inch 600GSM on Poured Concrete and Curved Surfaces

Before starting: repair any cracks in the wall with epoxy injection and allow full cure. The 600GSM strap is applied after the crack is sealed — it prevents re-cracking, not the initial seal.
- Mark strap locations. Plan vertical straps at maximum 4 ft on center. For curved surfaces, the 6-inch width conforms more naturally to the radius — dry-fit straps against the curve before cutting to confirm full contact along the strap length.
- Prepare the wall surface. Grind the full strap contact zone with a diamond cup wheel to bare concrete. On curved surfaces, adjust grinding angle to maintain contact across the full 6-inch width. Vacuum all dust thoroughly.
- Cut straps to length. Cut on a clean flat surface. For curved applications, cut slightly longer than needed — the strap can be trimmed after placement but cannot be extended.
- Mix the epoxy. Mix Startech Fiber Matrix Epoxy 2:1 by volume. The 600GSM fabric absorbs more epoxy per unit area than 300GSM due to its higher fiber density — do not under-estimate the epoxy volume needed per strap. The 900ml per 10 ft supplied accounts for this.
- Apply epoxy to wall and strap. Apply a generous epoxy bed to the prepared wall surface. Coat the strap bonding face. For curved surfaces, apply a slightly heavier epoxy coat to the strap to ensure the edges have enough material once the strap conforms to the radius.
- Place and consolidate. On flat walls, position and roll firmly center-outward. On curved surfaces, press the strap from the center of the curve outward toward the edges — work the strap into the curvature progressively rather than pressing the full width at once.
- Trowel thoroughly. The 600GSM requires deliberate troweling to drive epoxy through the full fiber depth — the thicker layup has more fiber to penetrate. Work in multiple passes with firm trowel pressure until no dry fiber is visible anywhere on the strap surface.
- Final roll and cure. Re-roll to smooth. Allow 24 hours cure before painting or coating.
Tips & Notes
1. Sound substrate required. The 600GSM strap delivers its load-carrying capacity only when the substrate can accept the interface stress. On block walls or visibly deteriorated concrete, use the 12-inch 300GSM instead.
2. Epoxy saturation is critical. More fiber depth means more epoxy needed per unit area than 300GSM. Do not ration epoxy on 600GSM — dry fiber inside the strap creates a plane of weakness at the fiber-epoxy interface.
3. Curved surfaces. Work the strap progressively from the apex of the curve outward. Pressing the full width at once on a tight radius can cause the strap to bridge at the center and lift at the edges.
4. Need more fiber density but not width? This is the right product. The 6-inch 450GSM is the alternative if you have documented ASTM laminated test data requirements — it has full D3039/D7264/D2344 test data available. The 600GSM has higher raw tensile numbers.

Common Questions — 6-Inch 600GSM Carbon Fiber
When should I choose 600GSM over 300GSM at the same 8-inch width?
The 600GSM 6-inch strap delivers more load resistance per inch of width than any of the 300GSM options — but in a narrower footprint. Choose 600GSM when wall space or geometry limits strap width to 6 inches, when the concrete substrate is strong enough to transfer the higher interface stress, and when maximum stiffness and re-crack prevention are the primary goals. If space allows an 8-inch or 12-inch strap and the substrate is sound, the 300GSM options may be sufficient and more economical.
Can I use the 600GSM strap on a block wall?
We do not recommend it. The 600GSM concentrates high load on a 6-inch bonding area. Block walls and mortar joints typically do not have the pull-off strength to sustain this interface stress, meaning the strap is likely to debond at the mortar joint before the fiber engages. For CMU, cinder block, or any masonry wall, use the 12-inch 300GSM to distribute load over a wider area.
Why is 600GSM better for curved surfaces than wider straps?
On a curved surface, a wide strap bridges across the concave face — contacting at the center and lifting away from the wall at the edges. The edge gaps create unbonded zones where the strap provides no reinforcement. A narrower strap follows the curve radius with less geometric distortion, maintaining full contact across its full width. The 6-inch width is narrow enough to conform to most residential foundation wall curvatures without bridging.
What is the difference between the 600GSM and 450GSM at 6-inch width?
Both are 6-inch unidirectional carbon fiber. The 600GSM has higher raw tensile strength (4,500 MPa vs 4,840 MPa laminated for 450GSM) and higher elastic modulus (240 GPa vs 255 GPa for 450GSM). The 450GSM product has a full set of ASTM-tested laminated composite properties including flexural strength (D7264) and shear strength (D2344) — making it the specification product when documented test data is required for an engineering report. The 600GSM is the general contractor choice when maximum raw tensile performance is the goal and laminated property documentation is not required.
Is more epoxy needed for 600GSM than for 300GSM?
Yes. The 600GSM fabric has twice the fiber density, which means twice the fiber-to-epoxy interface area to wet out. The 900ml per 10 ft supplied with 6-inch 600GSM orders accounts for this higher absorption. Do not try to stretch the epoxy across a 600GSM strap — inadequate saturation leaves dry fiber inside the layup, creating internal delamination planes that reduce the strap's effective load capacity.
