How Much Wall Does the 60ft Kit Cover?

The kit supplies 60ft of uncut unidirectional carbon fiber, so you cut each strap to match your own wall height. Carbon fiber straps are installed at the industry-standard spacing: the first strap 4ft in from each corner, then every 4ft on-center across the wall.

Because strap length equals your wall height — typically 7.5ft to 9ft — the number of straps you get from one kit depends on your ceiling height:

Why Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Outperforms Bidirectional Systems

Most carbon fiber foundation repair kits use bidirectional woven fiber. While it looks substantial, it is structurally inferior for wall reinforcement. Woven fibers crimp at every crossover point and must straighten before resisting load — which delays and reduces the repair's effectiveness. For a bowing foundation wall where immediate stiffness is critical, bidirectional fiber is the wrong specification.

The NX1614 uses true unidirectional 300GSM carbon fiber. Every fiber runs parallel and lies completely flat. When lateral soil pressure is applied, the fibers resist force immediately with no crimping and no strength loss. Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

Step 1 — Plan strap locations. Measure the wall and mark each strap position so no two straps exceed 4ft spacing, starting 4ft from each corner. Always place straps on both sides of window openings. Sketch your full layout before starting to grind.

Step 2 — Grind the wall surface. Using a hand grinder with the included 4.5 inch diamond cup wheel and a dust shroud connected to a vacuum, grind a 9-inch wide strip from top of wall to floor at each strap location. This exposes fresh clean concrete essential for epoxy adhesion. Grinders with dust shrouds are available at most equipment rental shops.

Step 3 — Vacuum thoroughly. Vacuum all ground areas completely before applying any epoxy. Any dust remaining on the surface will prevent proper bonding and compromise the repair.

Step 4 — Apply epoxy to the wall. Mix StarTech Carbon Fiber Resin epoxy per the supplied instructions and apply evenly to the prepared wall surface using the roller.

Step 5 — Apply epoxy to the carbon fiber strap. Apply epoxy to the wall-side face of the cut carbon fiber strap immediately before placing it on the wall.

Step 6 — Place the strap. Press the carbon fiber strap firmly onto the epoxied wall surface, aligning it vertically within the prepared strip. Work out any air bubbles or lifted edges.

Step 7 — Saturate and consolidate. Apply additional epoxy over the face of the strap and use a trowel to firmly press and work the resin through the carbon fiber, fully saturating every fiber. Repeat for all remaining strap locations.

Common Questions About Carbon Fiber Wall Repair

Q. How many straps will the 60ft kit make?
A. It depends on your wall height, because each strap runs floor to sill. Divide 60ft by your wall height: an 8ft wall yields about 7 straps, a 9ft wall about 6. Straps install 4ft from each corner and every 4ft on-center. Upgrade to 90ft for larger walls.

Q. How much stronger than steel is carbon fiber?

A. Yes. Closer spacing increases reinforcement and is beneficial where concrete is weak, the repair area is small, or cracking is extensive.

Q. Do I need a metal plate at the top of each carbon strap?
A. It depends on wall type. On block walls a plate or anchor can attach the strap to the sill plate. On poured concrete walls with an intact floor slab it is often not needed. Optional top and bottom anchors are available — call us to discuss your wall.

Q. Can a homeowner install this kit without a contractor?

Q. What is the purpose of the bottom wall anchors?
A. In most installs anchors are optional. For CMU block walls they act as shear pins to prevent the bottom block course from sliding inward. If the basement floor is poured tight against the bottom course, shear movement is unlikely and anchors are not needed.

Q. How is the carbon fiber supplied and how do I cut it?
A. The carbon fiber arrives as an uncut roll. Cut straps to length with sharp scissors on any flat surface — no special tools required.

Q. Can I place two straps side by side instead of a wider strap?
A. Yes. Two unidirectional straps placed side by side perform identically to a single strap of combined width.

Q. How does a carbon fiber strap stop a bowing wall?
A. The epoxy-bonded strap transfers lateral soil pressure loads across any cracks and distributes them to a much larger wall area. This immediately stabilizes the wall against further inward movement and prevents existing cracks from widening or propagating.

Q. Why is unidirectional carbon fiber stronger than bidirectional for this repair?
A. Bidirectional woven fiber crimps at every crossover point and must partially straighten before resisting load, losing strength in the process. Unidirectional fiber has no crimps — all fibers align immediately under load for maximum stiffness. For a bowing wall repair, stiffness is the critical variable.

Q. How long do carbon fiber straps last?
A. Carbon fiber bonded with epoxy to properly prepared concrete lasts the life of the structure. Carbon fiber does not rust, rot, corrode, or degrade over time.

Q. Can I apply straps in two directions for multi-directional cracking?
A. Yes. Apply one layer vertically and one horizontally with layers overlapping, providing reinforcement in two axes while maintaining the stiffness advantage of unidirectional fiber.

Q. How do I repair a failed foundation corner with carbon fiber?
A. Expose the exterior corner and apply straps horizontally, wrapping around the corner, minimum 8ft long at 2 to 4ft vertical spacing. Protect any epoxy exposed above grade from UV degradation with paint or cement parging.

Pro Installation Tips

1. Strap the entire affected wall rather than just the visibly cracked section. Reinforcing only part of a wall shifts stress concentration to the unstrapped areas.

2. Always place straps on both sides of every window opening. Window openings are stress concentration points and the most common location where wall movement originates.

3. Do not exceed 4ft on-center strap spacing, but closer is always better. If a window sits 3ft from a corner, place your first strap at 3ft to keep all spacing within the 4ft maximum.

4. Fill all cracks in the strap zone with epoxy injection (poured walls) or cement grout before applying carbon fiber (block walls). Strapping over an unfilled crack traps the void and reduces bonding effectiveness.

5. Horizontal cracks under window openings can be strapped horizontally beneath the opening, tying into the nearest vertical straps on each side.

7. For exterior corner repairs, install straps horizontally on the outside face of the corner at 2 to 4ft vertical spacing. Protect all epoxy above grade from UV with paint or cement parging.

We have a slight horizontal bow in our basement block wall (1.25in). Received all kinds of recommendations from rebuilding the wall, steel supports, carbon straps or just do nothing. After researching online we decided on a DIY solution as most of the basement "experts" had various opinions. The kit came quickly and all of the supplies we needed were inside.
